The Duchess of Cambridge attended Day One of The Wimbledon championships today, her first official engagement in her role as patron of the world renowned tennis organization.
Wimbledon is one of our favorite “royal” events of the year – this is the first year that Kate attends in an official capacity, but we have enjoyed seeing William and Catherine in the royal box over the past few years.
Today, Kate began her event on the Players’ Lawn, where she met current and former players ahead of the match.
She also met some of the championship’s ball boys, which must have been very exciting for these young guys!
11-year old Luca Schmetzer was honored with the pre-match coin toss. Luca was nominated by Place2Be, one of Catherine’s other patronages. Kate chose Place2Be to participate in the special event, to bring awareness to the work Place2Be does.
Kate took her seat in the Royal Box to watch Andy Murray versus Alexander Bublik. Their match was the first of the championships, with Murray advancing to the next round.
The Duchess of Cambridge recently revealed in an interview with the BBC that, while pregnant with Prince George, Kate was banned from attending Wimbledon’s final matches and seeing Andy’s 2013 victory. She felt so gutted that she sent a special note to him, apologizing for missing it and congratulating him.
Kate’s sartorial choices were spot-on today (get it?!) with a white a-line dress with black polka dots from Oscar de la Renta. The dress was a classic, feminine style that flattered the Duchess, while also honoring Wimbledon’s traditional white uniform requirements.
The Duchess accessorized with black block heel sandals from Office, a high street brand new to the Duchess’ wardrobe. Kate also debuted new cat-eye sunglasses by Givenchy. She wore Oscar de la Renta earrings and carried a Victoria Beckham tote bag, both of which we have seen previously.
Today was a really fun event, and we hope to see Kate attend more matches as the championships continue!
