The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge began their tour of Canada in Victoria, British Columbia this evening.
The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, Prince George and Princess Charlotte made their official arrival at a military airport in Victoria. The iconic arrival images of the Cambridge family were highly anticipated as they deplaned around 4 P.M. William helped George walk down the staircase while Kate carried Charlotte.
On the tarmac, there were plenty of official handshakes and photographs. Kate tried to coax Charlotte to wave to the crowds and shared a few encouraging words with Prince George.
The first event of the day took them to the British Columbia Legislative Assembly. The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge arrived for an official ceremonial arrival to start off their tour amongst thousands of locals who were hoping to catch a glimpse of the royals.
While at the British Columbia Legislative Assembly, William and Kate laid a wreath at the Cenotaph and participated in traditional military honors, including a 21-gun salute, breaking of His Royal Highness’ Canadian Standard, and an inspection of the guard by William.
There were short speeches by local and Canadian dignitaries and William’s first speech of the tour. The Duke of Cambridge addressed the Canadian people, partly in French, where he remarked, “work with me here, I’m a bit rusty.”
The royal couple also enjoyed a traditional welcome dance performed by the Lekwungen Tradtional Dancers from the Songhees Nations. There was a song and dance performance by the Equimalt Singers and Dancers from the Esquimalt Nation. There will be many events throughout the tour that celebrate the First Nation people.
Around 6 P.M., the Duke and Duchess departed the events at the British Columbia Legislative Assembly for Victoria’s Government House, where they shared an audience with the Governor General and Prime Minister.
The Cambridges and the Trudeaus meeting was a highly anticipated event for the tour. It was a pleasure to see them interacting throughout the evening. We wish we could have been a fly on the wall at their private meeting!
The remainder of the evening was spent privately with George and Charlotte. Tomorrow is a packed day for the Cambridges as they travel around Vancouver!
