One of the things that we can (I think) mostly agree on with Kate is that she has been very fortunate in life – she was born into a great family, married a Prince and gets to enjoy perks that many of us can only dream of. While her job is definitely not all easy (constant media scrutiny, engagements which would get tiring after awhile), she has also not been forced to have a job outside of the Palace like the rest of us generally have been required to.
One of the things we know for sure about Kate is that she is a passionate supporter of women and women improving their lot in life – her patronages are evidence of that if nothing else. One of the ways we see women coming into their own all around the world is through entrepreneurship. Today, we thought we would share some tips for anyone out there who ever wondered what Kate would do if she was looking to start a business – maybe something she might do had she not chosen the path she did.
Women have come a long way in their bid for equality in a man’s world, but there are still issues when it comes to women starting and running their own business. A big part of that is due to an outmoded outlook on a ‘woman’s place’ within society which then leaves her lacking the tools she needs to succeed. One noted philanthropist, Aubrey Chernick of California, has been instrumental in promoting crowdfunding that provides the financial backing many women need when starting a new venture. Here are a few of the necessary tools a woman needs to succeed in business.
Above All a Mentor
Since women have only been really active as business owners since the mid part of the last century, there is little history to base their decisions on. Yes, they could base their organizational standards on companies that are traditionally run by men, but women are confronted with issues that men never seem to be faced with. Some men still have trouble taking direction from women, especially in eastern nations dealing with western businesses. A mentor is always a good idea if that mentor is a woman who successfully faced many of the issues today’s businesswomen will be faced with.
As mentioned, financial backing is a key component in starting any business and oftentimes women seem to have a harder time finding the funds they need than do their male counterparts. Aubrey Chernick is one philanthropist who has recognized the problems people have in finding funding and has established NextGen crowdfunding so that other women who want to support businesswomen in their efforts can get a piece of the pie. Not only does this provide the necessary funding a woman needs but it lends an air of moral support at the same time – women believing in the power of women.
A Strong Support Team
Another tool any business startup needs is a strong support team. Unfortunately, female entrepreneurs seem to need this kind of support more than many men. Could it be that other professionals trust men to run businesses more than they trust women? It could be part of the issue but mostly a woman is just like a man when starting out and a support team enables any business owner to cover all bases. It is virtually impossible to be all things to all people but a team effort provides all the tools and talent needed to handle any task large or small.
Somewhere down the road in the next few decades, women may not be confronted with the dilemmas that women of today face. However, society has not yet caught up with the times and that’s why it is imperative that women come equipped with the tools needed to start a new business venture. From mentors to support teams to financial backing, these are all tools which must be in place to make a smooth entry into the world of commerce. Once they are in place, it’s time to show what you can do. It’s definitely something Kate would approve of.
