One thing that no one can argue about Kate is that she knows exactly what looks good on her body and sticks to her winning formula when styling her looks. Kate’s fashion sense is universally admired and her ability to work with basics to build a reliable, fashionable and classic look helps to ensure that she always looks amazing.
We thought it would be fun to look at those basics in a capsule form as something that you can look to repliKate in your own wardrobe. A capsule wardrobe is really just the fundamental basic pieces that are in your closet. The pieces you turn to everyday, the ones that will get the most use. Kate may have a much larger fashion budget than the rest of us but she still sticks with the core tenet of investing in core pieces in quality materials, craftsmanship and in a classic style to ensure that she always looks her best.
So what are the core pieces in Kate’s fall and winter wardrobe?
Jackets & Blazers
Kate has an amazing coat and blazer collection, doesn’t she? She often pairs a wool blazer, like the Smythe Duchess blazer, with jeans and a top to create a refined daytime look, especially for events that are a little more casual (Anyone remember her playing volleyball?) When it gets chillier outside, she has been spotted out and about in a warm utility jacket, a favourite being the Barbour brand, which is warm and stylish all at once. And the ultimate in chic? The black warm fur-lined jacket in the form of the Temperley Odele jacket she often wears for a chic look when running errands or visiting the park.
Shirts & Sweaters
Any fall or winter wardrobe definitely needs to have some layering pieces built in. I love layering with lightweight knits, and Kate does as well. She has been spotted in the past wearing a stylish slim cut navy sweater to pair with jeans or a skirt when there is a slight chill in the air. She’s also paired one of her summer weight silk blouses with a chic camel cardigan to keep summer clothes into the closet rotation a little longer. Lastly, Kate loves a good plaid button-up shirt. It’s a basic she wears in checks, plaids and tartans with pride!
A staple in any Princess’ wardorbe, wouldn’t you agree? Kate has often worn a comfortable but stylish black turtleneck dress… Including when pregnant! She’s worn the Seraphine black turtleneck dress most recently when visiting New York and has worn one by Oasis in the past. Kate loves to wear navy blue, and her fall wardrobe is no exception, often featuring a gorgeous navy work dress. A navy blue sheath dress that can be paired with the navy blazer above – or the cardigan for a more casual look – is a must.
Pants & Skirts
Could Kate’s closet really be complete without a pair (or two) of skinny jeans or pants? We think not. Kate’s closet always contains a pair of blue skinny jeans and a pair of black skinny jeans or pants. Kate loves her J Brand denim skinny jeans, and as converts ourselves we love them too. They have just the right amount of stretch to be wildly flattering without being skin tight and inappropriate. Because it’s fall, Kate also loves to wear wool on a more regular basis, often turning to a wool pleated skirt to ward off the chill while looking every inch the professional princess.
Shoes & Boots
Kate’s footwear is as reliable as the rest of her wardrobe. She’s found classics that work well for her and has embraced them for years and likely will continue for years to come! One thing we see as Kate is a true country girl at heart is a good pair of rain or wellie boots nearby. She’s often seen in Le Chameau boots while visiting with the Scouts or on the farm. For more formal events, she normally wears flat suede boots, heeled wedge boots or suede ankle boots to complete her look. Kate favours brands like Aquatalia, Stuart Weitzman and Russell & Bromley.
What would an outfit be without accessories? Sunny days can still happen when the mercury drops, and Kate is a huge fan of Ray-Ban sunglasses, often spotted with her Wayfarers. One way Kate injects colour into her outfits is with the clever use of a warm pashmina wrapped around her neck to ward off a chill. Her bags tend to be in the same classic palette we see in her wardrobe. We love Kate’s grey handbags as they are a particularly great idea to pair with all colours in her wardrobe. We’re particularly fond of her Tods D-Style bag She’s also known to love carrying around a Longchamp bag – the beloved famous Le Pliage style – perhaps to carry all her accessories for a weekend away?
All in all, Kate’s wardrobe is centred around pieces that work for her body, her lifestyle and her look. The most important ingredients in any wardrobe.
