The Duchess at Downton – On a highly anticipated engagement, the Duchess of Cambridge visited Ealing Studios to visit the cast, crew, and set of Downton Abbey. One of the UK’s
biggest achievements maybe ever most popular television shows is also one of Kate’s favorite shows.
Downton Abbey is the hugely popular show, which airs on ITV in the UK and PBS in the US. It is the recipient of numerous awards – most recently, Joanne Froggatt took home a Golden Globe for her portrayal as Anna.
Upon arrival, the Duchess of Cambridge greeted cast members and crew members. She was given a bouquet by the young actor who plays George, Mary’s son, on the show. Many royal watchers were thrilled to see both Kate and Mary naming their first sons George.
Then, Kate toured the various trailers on set. First was the make up trailer – undoubtedly a fun one! We wonder if Kate asked how Lady Mary always looks so effortless… Maybe she got some ideas from the hairstylist’s trailer! Kate was eager to meet with the many crew members on set.
Next up, Kate viewed the props on set, including the gloves, fine china, letters and post cards. The show is known for being meticulously true to historical fact, so these props are extremely important in setting the scene. She also toured the costume chamber and saw the stunning period costumes of the show, which are often recreations or revisionings of vintage pieces.
Kate toured the various sets, including the Dowager Countess’ house and the downstairs kitchen. While many scenes are shot at Highclere Castle – the real life Downton Abbey – many scenes are filmed on a set at Ealing Studios. The Duchess of Cambridge was given a special set of headphones so she could listen in on a scene being filmed.
The Twitter world was aflutter when Kate met with Lady Mary (Michelle Dockery) and Anna (Joanne Froggatt) on set while filming a scene. Mary and Anna are hugely popular and much beloved – almost as beloved as Kate. Almost.
Moseley and Baxer offered to polish the Duchess’ shoes when she visited them in The Boot Room. During her “downstairs” tour, she also met with Mrs, Huges and Mr. Bates. While visiting the famous Downton kitchen, Mrs. Patmore and Daisy presented Kate with a lovely cake to celebrate the visit.
*SPOILER ALERT* After meeting most of the cast and crew, the Duchess of Cambridge joined them for a group photo. In the photograph, we can see that Marigold and George are still in the nursery – but it appears Sibby and Tom have really truly left for America!
Before departing, Lady Mary and Master George presented the Duchess of Cambridge with a gift for Prince George. George received a small, wooden toy train from young actor Zac Barker, who plays Master George on the show.
The Duchess of Cambridge debuted a new maternity brand today – Jojo Maman Bebe. Kate wore the “Princess” maternity coat, so appropriately named, in cream. The site described the coat as: “A great investment piece for your maternity wardrobe, our long cream princess coat will fit over your bump at every stage of your pregnancy. The wool-mix fabric gives it a luxurious, cosy feel to keep you warm this season.”
Many sizes are still available, but the brand says it is selling fast. At only $69, the piece is a steal by royal accounts.
The Duchess accessorized with her Stuart Weitzman “Power” pumps in black suede. She clearly favors the style, as she wore them to yesterday’s event as well! She also carried her black suede Mulberry clutch. Also similar to yesterday, she wore her Anoushka pearl drop earrings.
It was so exciting to see two of our favorite worlds – Downton and the Duchess – collide for today’s event. It was truly one of our favorite royal engagements!
