The evening, the Duchess of Cambridge attended the 50th Annual Wildlife Photography Awards at the Natural History Museum in London. The Duchess of Cambridge has been patron of the Natural History Museum since April 2013, and her support for both the museum and these awards demonstrates her dedication to wildlife conservation and nature preservation.
The Wildlife Photography Awards showcase the extraordinary wildlife photographers of the world, but also provides a platform to raise awareness for endangered species. This year’s photograph selections focused on “the twists of fate that determine survival.” These “glimpses of extinction” show tigers in frozen climates and sparring ibexes.
Between the adult categories and the young competition, there are 11 awards given tonight. According to the Wildlife Photography of the Year website: “for 50 years, the Wildlife Photographer of the Year competition has championed honest and ethical wildlife photography, while pushing the boundaries of artistic freedom, technical skill and narrative excellence.”
The evening was a black tie affair in the museum’s formal event space, with a dinosaur skeleton as the room’s centrepiece. The Duchess of Cambridge has attended a few formal events at the venue, including a screening of Sir David Attenborough’s latest 3D film venture. Attenborough also attended tonight’s event.
Guests began arriving at 7PM for the 8 o’clock dinner and awards ceremony. The Duchess of Cambridge joined the party around 7:30. She arrived in a stunning light blue gown by Jenny Packham. The floor length bespoke dress featured long sleeves and a waist-high slit.
The Duchess accessorized with LK Bennett “Agata” sandals – seen previously at the ARK Gala in 2011 – in a creamy pink suede. She carried a cream suede clutch by Alexander McQueen, also a bespoke piece, which the lovely Ashley on Twitter (@livelovelaughvr) discovered. For jewels, the Duchess really surprised us with a bubbly diamond statement necklace and earrings by Monica Vinader.
