PeacePlayers International (PPI) is an organization aimed at bridging gaps and bringing children together in communities in Northern Ireland, South Africa, Israel, and Cyprus. They do this through a “peacebuilding-and-leadership development curriculum” that teaches them various tactics for improving their individual communities. Their mission is “to unite, educate and inspire young people in divided communities” and they do this through playing basketball and other leadership activities. PPI works on bridging divides, developing leaders, and changing perceptions in these communities and want to do this through the youth. The PPI program began in 2001 in South Africa and has since expanded to more than 59,000 participants and over 800 youth leaders.
Kate and Will selected PPI-Northern Ireland as one of the charities to be a recipient of the Royal Wedding Charity Fund, which asked for donations to various charities instead of wedding gifts. In their March 2011 pre-wedding visit to Belfast, the couple met representatives from PPI-NI and learned more about the organization, which encouraged them to select it to be a part of the charity fund. The couple’s selection of PPI highlights their commitment to both world peace and the power of young people.
