Trench coats have been in style for nearly a century, making their big break during World War I. They have a timelessly-chic and seasonless quality to them. Add a scarf and boots in winter, or layer over a sundress on a cool summer’s evening. A good trench coat is an investment in your wardrobe. It will last you for years to come.
Catherine is naturally drawn to trench coats. In addition to her short Zara trench (top left), her Burberry coat (top center) and her classic trench (top right), she has worn a navy Ted Baker trench and a Barbour anorak-style trench. Obviously, living in foggy old London requires more rain gear than living in California, but you will still get plenty of wear out of a good coat.
With an adorable ruffle hem and shorter hem, this Buffalo by David Bitton coat ($65) is too cute to resist. The ruffle, similar to Kate’s Burberry trench, is a darling accent. Pair this with a black t-shirt, skinny jeans and flats for a casual ensemble. (Bottom left)
London Fog is a classic brand for trench coats, so this classic style ($178) will serve you well. This is truly a classic trench that will work over dresses, jeans or with boots and tights like Kate in her Ted Baker coat. (Bottom center)
A mid-length trench will serve all your needs, from over your work clothes or your weekend jeans. The GUESS Ruffle Front Trench ($83) has a brilliant ruffle detail, which is very reminiscent of the Reiss Nanette dress that Kate loved so much. (Bottom right)
