In all my time looking at pictures of Kate, I’ve yet to see something that seems to plague so many celebrities out there- the nip/boob slip either as the result of a see-thru top, low cut dress or poorly designed strap system. What surprises me is that the answer to stopping these wardrobe malfunctions is surprisingly easy and readily known by stylists who would be teaching these starlets how to dress for the red carpet. Is it safe to say then that they’re on purpose? In any case, what I do know for sure is that Kate is not a fan of letting more than she intends to be seen by her public and today I’ll get into some more detail about how she might accomplish this.
The very first thing that every girl needs in her wardrobe is the essential underpinnings which complete the look underneath your clothes and are truly the first step in leaving the house looking fabulous. What am I talking about? Well, I’m of course talking about a good bra and panties- but more than that I’m talking about something that has been somewhat forgotten by younger generations (mine included) which are slips and camisoles.
Now for those of you out of the loop, a camisole is simply a tank top that is worn underneath another shirt in order to have the outer fabric rest better against the skin, prevent see-thru disasters or even flatten jiggly bits which you’d prefer to otherwise keep under wraps. A slip is simply a longer version of that that is worn with a dress to cover all the sucking in and material underneath, going down and covering your bum. The best camisoles that I have been able to track down are those which are made of a slightly slinky material- not cotton- which will skim the body and prevent a shirt worn on top from sticking to it. My personal style is that I wear a lot of silky blouses and these are often sheer or inappropriate to wear without a camisole underneath, so I have a collection of three camisoles which I rotate amongst; One white, one nude and one black. The best camisole I’ve bought was actually relatively inexpensive- the $24 Reversible Seamless Tank from Anthropologie. It’s a reversible v-neck/scoop neck tank meaning you can flip back and forth between two of the most popular necklines and always be covered.
And then we get to the part for those of us not blessed with Kate’s amazing slender build; The other benefit of camisoles is definitely in the figure flattery area thanks to a great woman named Sara Blakely, the founder of Spanx. These figure enhancing items will suck pretty much everything in to make it look smoother, more toned and even skinnier- truly what every woman is looking for in an undergarment, am I right? They come in every combination you can dream of… and even come in sexier styles than what you’d have formerly thought of as shapewear. Spanx is typically expensive if you’re buying it retail, but check out sites like eBay if you’re comfortable with that as the sizing for Spanxis kind of like tights where you can fit yourself into a chart on the back, making it an easy thing to buy online.
And then slips- something that should arguably be sold with certain dresses in stores. The point of a slip is to provide a barrier between your undergarments and your dress so you can portray a smooth silhouette. Doesn’t that sound idyllic? I’ve been in professional business meetings with Executives where I just want to take them aside and ask if they realized their x, y’s or z’s were showing. Funnily enough, I had a conversation with my mom not long ago about where she could buy a slip since they seemed to be very out of fashion. We asked the woman at a high-end lingerie boutique and she said she rarely saw them because they were initially designed to cover girdle lines and things that just aren’t part of modern fashion. Modern day slips are very similar to camisoles- and often have a shapewear facet to them. My favorite are the Spanx Slimcognito slips which I like to call the modern day corsets.
Even if I were as tiny as Kate, I’d likely still wear one underneath as they are super comfortable and guarantee no wardrobe malfunctions! Celebrities are even getting on board with wearing them- and since they’re generally wearing less conservative clothes than our Kate… Flashing them!
